The main story of the Arabian Night’s tales is the story of Sultan Shahryar, who was shocked to learn about his wife’s infidelity and has her executed. In his bitterness and grief, he decides all women are the same and seeks revenge. The Sultan begins to marry a succession of virgins, only to execute each one the next morning before she has a chance to dishonour him. Eventually the Grand Vizier, whose duty it is to provide the virgins, cannot find any more. His daughter, Shéhérazade, offers herself as the next bride and her father reluctantly agrees. On the night of their marriage, Shéhérazade begins to tell Sultan Shahryar a tale, but refuses to reveal the ending. The Sultan is curious as to how the story ends and is forced to postpone her execution in order to hear the story’s conclusion. The next night, as soon as she finishes the tale, she begins a new story and once again refuses to finish it, and once again, the Sultan who is eager to hear the conclusion of this tale, postpones her execution. Eventually after One Thousand and One nights, Shéhérazade wins the Sultan’s trust and he renounces her execution completely.
